Month: February 2015

  • Weird keyboard obsession

Sean Buckley is apparently more obsessed by keyboards than I am. From his roundup of weird typing devices, where I happen to own the Alphasmart Neo (and its successor):

I learned about boring keyboards in college, when a nasty case of carpel tunnel syndrome threatened to silence my fingers forever. Then, one day, my father lent me a ridiculous vertical keyboard that changed how I think about typing. Now I can’t stop collecting oddball keyboards.

  • Crush Bot takes on Tinder

A bot, @CrshBot, is challanging Tinder, on Twitter of course. Its bio:

DM Crush Bot with up to 5 Twitter crushes (e.g. @CrshBot). If any of them pick you too, we’ll let you both know. Made by @NewInquiry Div. of Special Projects.

Nice stunt by The New Inquiry.

  • Conan breaks Kickstarter boardgame record

The Conan boardgame, by Monolith Board Games, has just finished a crazy successful Kickstarter campaign. I'm happy to be a backer here, because all those stretch goals, the collector's box, and a companion app, well, it's just mindboggling.

    • $3,327,467 Dollars
    • 16036 Backers
    • 95 updates
    • 55 Stretch goals
    • 22 Add-ons Over
    • 200 models
    • Officially the most successful board game on Kickstarter…

As a Robert E. Howard fan, this makes me extra happy.

  • How noise-canceling headphones work

If you ever wondered how noise-canceling headphones works, this is the piece to read. Don’t worry, it’s short and not particularly technical, which might be a problem for some of you. It does point out why I stick to regular ol’ headphones though:

Noise-canceling headphones may offer great sound, but they do have this limitation: anything you listen to, with active noise cancellation turned on, will be affected by this hiss. Because of this, no noise-canceling headphone will sound as good as regular headphones of the same audio quality.

  • Of course you can work from a Windows tablet

    Sean Buckley, writing for Gizmodo:

It started as an offhand brag, but turned into a dare. I was telling my Gizmodo colleagues why I loved my Windows 8 tablet: it’s fast, it’s cheap, it’s a fully fledged PC. Hell, I said, I could probably hook it up to a monitor and use it as my workhorse for a week.

Now I’m doing just that. It’s not as bad as you’d think.

There’s no reason why this wouldn’t work, even though it’s no Surface, but still an interesting read for tablet curious people.

  • App Store and iOS versions

9to5mac, pointing out the problem of apps that stop working due to iOS version updates. This time, it’s a game from Square Enix, who should be ashamed for not pulling this right away, thus fooling its customers.

But what happens when an app — marketed as compatible with current iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches — is never updated for the latest version of iOS, and either stops working after an iOS upgrade, or never works at all on new devices? That’s the situation buyers of Square Enix’s $18 The World Ends with You: Solo Remix (and $20 iPad version) have found themselves in since iOS 8 was released. The game’s description claims that it “requires iOS 4.3 or later” and is compatible with devices that shipped with iOS 8, but it wasn’t actually iOS 8-compatible.

Apple should consider stepping in and removing this game.

  • Things I've enjoyed in January 2015

Things I've enjoyed in January 2015

It’s easy getting stuck focusing on negative things these days, so I figured I’d try and lift some positive stuff. So here are some things I’ve enjoyed using and/or experiencing in January 2015:

    • Todoist, a truly capable todo list alternative. There are a ton of these, this is my pick at the moment.
    • Asus ROG G751J, my new gaming computer. It’s pretty darn powerful.
    • Elder Scrolls Online (and Skyrim with a slew of mods), possibly somewhat pertaining to said gaming device. I’ve also managed to kill some time in Civilization: Beyond Earth.
    • Ulysses for iPad, which I’m beta testing, will be a writing app for all to consider. It should come as no surprise that it works great with Ulysses III for Mac.
    • Logitech K480 has gotten its fair share of use, because it sits well in my lap. That said, on a table I still prefer the Compass with Logitech Easy-Switch…
    • Being back at work, although it interferes with both my writing, and rekindled interest in gaming.
    • Writing a role-playing game rules system, and the first game that uses it, was loads of fun. This’ll be released later this year. I enjoyed the world building here too, in part because it’s something I’ll use in fiction projects later this year.

What have you enjoyed this first month of 2015? Tell me on Twitter, if you like, or write a post of your own.
