No doubt you’ve read posts, interviews and articles where writers talk about the importance of your own writing place. The writer’s sanctuary can be just about anything, a place under the stairs, a converted cupboard, your home office, or a lavish castle draped in vines with a moat keeping the mob at bay. It really doesn’t matter, the know it all’s will tell you, as the important thing is that you have a place where you can write.

And you know what, they’re right.

There really isn’t much to say about that. You need a place to write. Ideally that’s the only thing you do there, but this is a luxury not all of us can afford. As long as this place is for writing when you’re there, and no one bothers you while you perform your craft, that’ll do.

Places that won’t do include coffee shops, bars, cubicle landscapes, trains, the backseat of a car, and any place where kids will bother you endlessly.

I’m not saying you can’t write in those places, I’ve wrapped up books on the iPhone in a crowded bus so it entirely possible, but hardly ideal.

Find your own writing place, make sure people know not to bother you unless it is an emergency when you’re in there, and make it your second home. And write something.
