Apple har (äntligen) uppdaterat iPod touch till något lite modernare. Jag skrev lite om det, och vad det kan innebära, på TDH.me.
But here’s the thing: I don’t think that the iPod touch exists to be an entry level device. I think this is the replacement for the iPod classic, because you can fit a whole lot of media in 128 GB. I also think that Apple wants to keep the iPod alive, and understands that some people doesn’t want to rely on streaming at all times, and thus they offer this. The iPod touch is the top of the line iPod, a true entertainment machine that can do so much more than just play music.
Apple has released a new model of the iPod touch, alongside new iPod models. Where the latter are more or less the same as before with new colors, the iPod touch is a different story.
The new iPod touch retains the same form factor as before, adding new colors. That means that it’s still a 4 inch screen, much like th iPhone 5/5s has. This is surprising, since Apple used to keep the iPod touch in line with the current iPhone, but obviously that’s out of the window since they left it untouched for years, up until now.
With iOS 7, Apple’s mobile devices got support for controllers. That means that all those less than perfect platform games with crappy on-screen buttons can be enjoyable again, at least if the developers implement support for controllers. Which they no doubt will, this is a huge market and a big fat slap in the face of the traditional game companies, such as Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Welcome to the fray, Apple.

When Apple announced and later launched both the iPhone 5c and 5s, there were no word of an iPod touch update. I found that peculiar, usually the iPod touch follow the iPhone in terms of horsepower, but not this time, at least not yet.
It does make perfect sense though. The iPod touch update will be compatible with these new MFi, or Made for iOS (or iPhone, to be precise) controllers, they’ll fit in the nasty encasings that Logitech and numerous others no doubt will flood the market with, and they’ll make an even bigger bump in the handheld games market. I wouldn’t want to have spent tons of money on PlayStation Vita right now, if you know what I mean. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch will continue to shake things up, more so than ever with the upcoming controllers.
Both the iPhone and iPad have gotten great new models, for various price ranges. The iPod touch is a bit of an oddity in the lineup perhaps, but it’s selling, and I think Apple saved it for a later (minor) announcement. One that, combined with said controllers, will be another reason for Nintendo and Sony to loose sleep over their handheld business.
This is not an iPhone 5 review. In fact, I have yet to hold the phone in my hand, and although I obviously will buy it, I will do so unlocked and without a contract. I’ve read the reviews and that, combined with the fact that I trust Apple knows what they’re doing, is good enough for me.
I wasn’t always so sure about the taller form factor though. In many ways I think the iPhone 4/4S size is perfect, and I really don’t want my phone to be larger than that. Sure, the iPhone 5 is lighter and thinner, but I already think that the smartphones of today are taking up too much room in our pockets. A more elongated design isn’t exactly helping out there, but again, I trust in Apple’s design skills here.
Igår hade Apple sitt septemberevent, vilket betyder nya iPod-modeller och fokus på musik. Så även den här gången, även om det rann in lite iOS-snack också.
Vi börjar med det uppenbara.
Ny iPod touch är det stora. I praktiken en stympad iPhone 4, det vill säga underbara Retina-skärmen, FaceTime tack vare enkel kamera, och en sunkig filmkamera. A4-chip gör den snabb och synnerligen spelbar. Och det är ju spel som säljer touchen, bland annat förstås, men så vill Apple förstås gärna få det att verka. Man talar om att sälja fler enheter än Nintendo och Sony tillsammans, vilket är sant och totalt ointressant. Alla köper inte en touch för att spela, och summorna pengar man faktiskt spenderar på appar torde ligga i lä gentemot vad en PSP-ägare bränner, exempelvis. (more…)
Smart drag från Apple, nu heter det inte iPhone OS längre utan iOS. Med tanke på iPad och i viss mån iPod touch (och kommande Apple TV…) så känns “iPhone” i namnet missvisande.
Det är synnerligen synkroniserat, läsplattornas utrullande i Sverige. För precis som Adlibris (vilka var de som överraskade med tajmingen) så har Bokus läsplattor på gång. Två stycken faktiskt, Cybook Opus och iRiver story. Den förstnämnda kan inhandlas för 1 995 kr om du är snabb (?), eftersom den 100 första får specialpris – ordinarie pris är nämligen 2 895 kr.
Dyrt, igen alltså – Letto-plattan kostar 1 495 kr just nu vilket gör den till det billiga alternativet just nu, men senare blir det över 3 000 kr som bekant.
Adlibris släpper läsplatta, levererar den 23 februari och kallar den för Letto (fast det är en BeBook), pratar om Lettoböcker och vill att du ska förhandsboka för 1 495 kr. Den nyheten landade tungt idag, dels via Bonnier och dels via Adlibris själva.
Jag förstår varför. Bonnierförlagen vill sälja e-böcker, liksom övriga i branschen, men det tar liksom inte fart. Så därför tar man saken i egna händer genom att släppa en platta – Letto då alltså – och hoppas att snöbollen börjar rulla. Och Adlibris vill förstås bli Platsen med stort P för e-böcker i Sverige.
Vinnarbidraget är traditionellt och, ärligt talat, direkt ospännande. När en mockup design ser rörig ut så är någonting fel, och inte blir det bättre av disharmonin i de två smala högerspalterna. Det är förvisso på intet sätt lätt att trycka in mycket information på en och samma skärm, men en liten fundering kring whitespace hade inte skadat något av bidragen, möjligen undantaget Daniel Falks. Alla finalister samt motiveringar finns här. Med det sagt, grattis Madeleine!
Hög eller låg kvalitet, förresten? Tankeverkstad och tävlingar i all ära, men många stressade designers med deadlines över huvudet skippade nog det här med tanke på det inte alltför imponerande priset (en iPod Touch). Cred går inte att äta, trots allt.
