Microsoft has open sourced its blogging application Windows Live Writer, as Open Live Writer:
Open Live Writer is an open source application enabling users to author, edit, and publish blog posts. It is based on a fork of the well-loved but not actively developed Windows Live Writer code. Open Live Writer is provided under a MIT license.
This is what you do when you can’t or won’t support software anymore. Google and Dropbox have a lot to learn about doing the right thing in this regard.
25% of the web, every fourth site, is now powered by WordPress, according to W3Tech. Usability and open source in a nutshell. Nearest competitor is Joomla (under 3%), then Drupal (barely over 2%). Just over 57% of the sites have no obvious CMS at all though. That’s where the growth is, says WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg. There’s still a lot to do for open source, and democratic, online publishing.
Groupon is now open to consider another name, leaving Gnome alone:
Our relationship with the open source community is more important to us than a product name. And if we can’t come up with a mutually acceptable solution, we’ll be glad to look for another name.
All the bad press probably got to them, but that matters little. At least they’re doing the right thing.
Groupon is launching a product called “Gnome”, and are making life hard for GNOME, an open source Linux desktop environment that’s been around since 1999. It’s also a registered trademark.
Recently Groupon announced a product with the same product name as GNOME. Groupon’s product is a tablet based point of sale “operating system for merchants to run their entire operation." The GNOME community was shocked that Groupon would use our mark for a product so closely related to the GNOME desktop and technology. It was almost inconceivable to us that Groupon, with over $2.5 billion in annual revenue, a full legal team and a huge engineering staff would not have heard of the GNOME project, found our trademark registration using a casual search, or even found our website, but we nevertheless got in touch with them and asked them to pick another name. Not only did Groupon refuse, but it has now filed even more trademark applications (the full list of applications they filed can be found here, here and here)

Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, thinks we, who make money off the open source publishing platform, should contribute more. 5% of our time, actually.
It’s a big commitment, but I can’t think of a better long-term investment in the health of WordPress overall. I think it will look incredibly modest in hindsight. This ratio is probably the bare minimum for a sustainable ecosystem, avoiding the tragedy of the commons. I think the 5% rule is one that all open source projects and companies should follow, at least if they want to be vibrant a decade from now.
The relevance of WordPress is in our hands, and although I’m not so sure about the numbers (5% might nit be the sweet-spot), I do believe that we need to amp up the contributions from the commercial side of things. We’ll definitely be talking about this at Odd Alice, where we already have contributions and core patches to be proud of, but we can no doubt do more.
Apropå en (förhoppningsvis avslutad) diskussion på Facebook så tog jag mig i kragen och skrev klart posten Lack Of Trust och publicerade den på TDH.me i går kväll. Den behandlar tilliten till varandra inom öppen källkodsprojekt, ett ämne jag rört tidigare i en omdebatterad krönika.

The members of an open source community need to trust each other. It takes all kinds to make a community, not just a small core group of brilliant minds. No question is too stupid, no problem is too small, no suggestion is too trivial, et cetera.
It really is a matter of trust, because the next time someone isn’t meeting the launch date, everyone need to trust that there’s a good reason for the delay.
Risken med projekt där folk lägger ned sin fritid, och inte sällan sin själ, är att de tröttnar. Det är ett allvarligt problem, för så fort ett öppen källkodsprojekt får negativa vibbar så går viljan att vara delaktig med, dels från befintligt engagerade, och dels från potentiella nytillskott.

Open source communities are built on people volunteering time and knowledge to something they want to support. This isn’t always without friction. Sometimes users of contributed code react poorly to bugs, to delayed launches, to answers they didn’t like, and so on. As someone who has given my fair share of time to open source projects over the years, I know how hard it can be not getting any appreciation for your work.
Time spent doing something so that others can enjoy it, is fragile.
Yes, the word is fragile. Because if people keep thinking the worst of you, thinking that you’re not doing the best you can given the circumstances, then you get fed up. Actually, you get angry, annoyed, sad, and then you get fed up.
Why spend your free time giving something to others when they don’t appreciate you?
För ett tag sedan blev det lite surr kring WordPress-skaparen Matt Mullenwegs post om att version 1.0 inte kan komma tidigt nog. I korthet propsade Matt på att man ska lansera, och sedan jobba vidare – få det gjort.
Jag tror på det, som ni kanske anat.
Ajour har som bekant rullat ut med buller och bång, frågetecken och kritik och uppmuntran och hyllningar och sågningar och påhopp och respons och ambivalens och ointresse och hajpsnack och allt däremellan. Lanseringen har kallats ett misslyckande för att vi – jag är en av medgrundarna – inte lyckades leva upp till hajpen. Det är aldrig bra att inte leva upp till hajpen, man ska alltid leverera lite mer än vad man utlovat. (more…)
Jag kan inte säga att jag är förvånad över Putins uttalande om att ryska institutioner ska börja lägga om kursen mot open source-programvara under andra kvartalet i år. En rysk statlig Linux-distribution är säkerligen att vänta. Helt rätt!
CAP&Design är en tidning jag uppenbarligen borde läsa mer. Senaste numret (nummer 4, 2009) har förvisso ett tema jag gillar – designa för WordPress – men visade sig vara en trevlig överraskning i övrigt med. Dessutom tryckt på skönt papper med trevlig layout, jag gillar.
Men nu var det just WordPress-delen som var lite extra intressant för mig. Förutom ett par sköna case studies på sajter som kör WordPress så finns det dessutom en artikel om själva systemet, där jag medverkar som intervjuobjekt. Naturligtvis pratar jag precis så varmt om WordPress som jag brukar, kryddat med en numera rätt så välanvänd oneliner:
– Det finns inte en redaktionell sajt i Sverige jag inte kan bygga i WordPress.
Jag står för den. Ge mig en budget, tidningssajter, så ska jag spara er licenspengar med open source. Jag vet att ni vill, vissa av er…
Säger en väldig massa annat också, det mesta aningen mindre kontroversiellt kanske, men inte desto mindre sant. Så se till att inhandla CAP&Design nummer 4, 2009. Det är ett bra köp.
Tidningen Fokus, som då och då stoltserar med alldeles utmärkt innehåll, tänker ge bort sin design. Det är nämligen så att hela sajten, fokus.se då alltså, är byggd på WordPress, och temat ska erbjudas via officiella wordpress.org. Goda nyheter, inte för att det är en perfekt design eller så, men för att tilltaget får uppmärksamhet, och det med all rätt. Läs Jonatan Frieds post om saken, där han även pratar kärlek till öppen källkod och planerna.
Jag tycker det här är ett härligt tilltag. Fokus har bevisligen förstått att WordPress är en plattform att bygga på, och på intet sätt begränsad till traditionellt bloggande. Det är en av de saker jag vill få fram med Börja Blogga, så det glädjer mig dubbelt.
Hade tänkt skriva uttömmande om det här, men dagen kom ikapp mig, så jag nöjer mig med att peka på Google Code-utannonserandet, Jockes jaik samt bloggpost, IDG:s lilla blänkare, samt inte minst min egna analys på The Blog Herald.
Canonical heter företaget som driver utvecklingen av Linuxdistributionen Ubuntu, gratis för alla att ladda hem och köra för såväl privat som kommersiellt. Ubuntu är open source, så vem som helst kan knoppa av en egen distribution, Canonical äger på intet sätt själva systemet. Själva företaget är Mark Shuttleworths verk, en Linuxentusiast med massor med pengar. Nu får det dock vara nog med investeringarna, enligt TechWorld, som basunerar ut det på kvällstidningsmanér: Ubuntus pengar håller på att ta slut. Luktar kvällstidning, inte sant? (more…)
Det sköna gänget på Mindpark skräder inte orden när open source ställs mot kommersiella webbpubliceringssystem, och det med all rätt. WordPress, Drupal, Movable Type Open Source, Textpattern – det är alla stabila open source-system som bör tas som seriösa alternativ till kostsamma kommersiella lösningar. Läs hela posten.
För övrigt vill jag knuffa för den nya svenska WordPress-översättningen som finns ute nu, för version 2.5 så klart, samt nystartade WordPressklubben (det heter WordPress enligt de ansvariga, för övrigt, vilket är helt okej att skita i tycker jag). Den senare överväger jag att engagera mig i, för övrigt.
Lite söndagslänkar som plåster på såren för att jag inte fixat de sista betagrejorna, trots att det här var debetafieringsveckan. I gengäld så har jag grejat lite andra grejor som jag rullar ut här på tdh.se så snart den engelskspråkiga editionen är lanserad. I beta, förstås… (more…)
