  • Fullscreen as a productivity booster

    Usually when I write a blog post on a computer I do so in a text editor. I prefer software like OmmWriter, WriteRoom and Scrivener, rather than full-fledged word processors like Pages, OpenOffice or Word. In fact, I could go on about why that last one is a trojan from Hell, but that’s a completely different matter.

    OmmWriter (my most recent favorite when it comes to text composing) shares one thing with WriteRoom and Scrivener: It has a fullscreen mode. It also does one thing better than the other two, and that’s automatically shutting off Growl, the notification service most diehard Mac users find indispensable for interruptions during the day.   • Applications on my desktop right now

    The last couple of months have been hard on me, mostly in a good way. I’ll get to why later, for now I’m just thrilled. Why? Well, because there are some new applications I’ve been meaning to try out, and will finally be able to now.

    You know, the list goes on. Very cool. I am, in fact, writing this post in MarsEdit 3.something which feels nice. This used to be my blog post home back in the day. I doubt it will be again, unfortunately (and I’ll get to why later on) but still, feels nice.

    So, good times ahead!

  • The tools that help me write

    I’m writing a lot, and that’s an understatement. We’re talking about tens of thousands of characters every day, at least when I’ve got a lot of freelance gigs, which I tend to have. Tight deadline force me to produce a lot of content each month, but I don’t mind, I work best when somewhat short on time. If I’m not, I’ll end up doing other things until the deadline makes me sweat. You might say I need the pressure to perform. That might not be true for you, we are all different.

    I’m a Mac user and have been for years. My primary writing machine is a MacBook Air (I’ll get to my gear later), bought to write the Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog book. I absolutely adore it and won’t sell it until Apple releases a new model. Yes, it is that good. Loaded with the right kind of writing software I find it even sparks my productivity, not bad for a cold dead computer. (more…)

  • Därför valde jag Macbook Air

    Jämför man Macbook Air med unibody-Macbooken (aluminium alltså) så känns det nästan pinsamt att erkänna att jag valde den förra till min nya skrivmaskin. Den senare är nämligen bättre på nästan varje punkt (sämre cache och väger mer står på minuskontot) och du får helt enkelt så mycket mer dator för slantarna. Faktum är att du inte ens behöver betala lika mycket, du kan komplettera med externa hårddiskar eller vad du nu känner för.

    Jag var medveten om detta när jag drog upp plastkortet för att betala för min Air. Faktum är att jag hade lite ångest inför valet. Lite. Men i slutändan tror jag det var rätt för mig. (more…)
