  • Safari extensions gallery now require developers to pay up

    Safari extensions from the official extensions gallery will, from Safari 9.0, be signed by Apple:

    Secure Extensions Distribution introduces improved security for Safari on OS X. All extensions in the Safari Extensions Gallery are now hosted and signed by Apple. Users can trust that the Safari Extension they install is the one you submitted.

    This means that extension developers will have to enroll in the $99 Apple Developer program if they want to update their extensions and, presumably, keep them in the official gallery. Naturally, some developers are pissed off by this, forgetting that this means better security for Safari users. I think this is a good thing.

  • Tre tankar om Mountain Lion

    Jag vet, jag är sen till diskussionen, första punktsläppet till Mountain Lion är redan på beta 2 så det här är gamla nyheter. Fast inte för mig, för när Mountain Lion släpptes (och ni gnälled om installationstider på timmen) så satt jag och mådde bra vid en sjö i skogen. Inte längre dock, så nu kör jag Mountain Lion på min Air, men fortfarande Lion på såväl Mac mini-servern som MacBook Pron och iMacen.

    Så, tre tankar om Mountain Lion.

  • On Lion: I miss my Spaces

    The latest operating system for Mac from Apple is called Lion. Apple talks less and less about “OS X” when they mention Lion, and the version number is usually missing (10.7 if you wanted to know) from any information. It just works, as Apple and their cohorts tend to say.

    Is it perfect, this Lion-thingy?

    No, Google tells me there are a ton of bugs. Nothing too crucial although it might depend on what you’re doing with your computer, so I urge you to research that before updating your OS. (more…)

  • Chrome and Safari in perfect harmony

    I had an idea that I wouldn’t install Google’s Chrome browser on the workstation. The idea was to stick with Safari for as long as I could, to keep the install clean.

    Two things made me install Chrome:

    1. I needed an alternative browser for work.
    2. I missed my Chrome Web Apps.

    Number 2 made me install Chrome this morning, and a few hours later I have found harmony in the two browsers. It’s really quite simple.

    Chrome is for work. (Gmail, Docs, Reader, research, inspecting code and so on.)

    Safari is for consuming. (Browse the web. Period.)

    Both are open on my desktop right now, and I think this will work out great.

  • Readability is Instapaper with a bit of Flattr to it

    The Readability experiment on the Arc90 blog got some exposure and is overall a pretty cool bookmarklet that lets you strip away all the nasty stuff (that’ll be ads and poor design) from websites. It’s built into Safari and is actually something of a live version of Instapaper.

    And now it’s available for $5/month (or more, if you want to), on its own site and all.

  • Google hårdpushar verkligen Chrome

    Det är tydligt att Google vill se sin webbläsare Chrome växa ytterligare, om någon tvivlade på det. I flera veckor möts man av det här meddelandet på YouTube när man besöker den med “fel” webbläsare. Lustigt nog så innefattar det såväl Gecko- som Webkit-baserade diton – den sistnämnda motorn används även av Chrome. Man har med andra ord inte bara riktat in sig på Microsofts Internet Explorer, som annars är rätt vanligt online, utan ger sig på allt som inte är Chrome.

    Och folk förundrades över varför Apple funderar på att byta ut Google som standardsökmotor mot Microsoft-alternativet Bing?

    För övrigt är Chrome mitt förstahandsval numera. Den är inte hundraprocentig, saknar vettig bokmärkeshantering (vilket är på väg in, som Chromium-användare noterat), och som vanligt är det en del sajter som helt enkelt inte fungerar som de ska – främst banker, de är alltid några år efter verkar det som – men Chrome är rapp och snabbstartad. Svårslaget för en webbarbetare som undertecknad.

  • Firefox knappar in på Internet Explorer

    firefox.jpgNoterar att Internet Explorer fortfarande är den dominerande webbläsaren, den nyttjas av närmre 55% av Pakten-besökarna. Av dessa 55% har 63% version 7.0, den senaste, medan övriga har 6.0 – en skrämmande uppdelning med tanke på hur urusel 6.0 är. (more…)

  • iPhone är ute i USA – nej, inget prylsug ännu, sorry Apple

    iPhoneiPhone är nu släppt i USA, och sålde förstås slut. Det var väntat, Apple-fansen är tokiga i, ja, allt som finns med det halvätna äpplet ärligt talat. Just iPhone är jag dock totalt ointresserad av. Möjligen om den kom med 3G, då kanske vi kan snacka, men det känns som en klumpig pryl att släpa med sig. Jag kan säkert ändra mig, men prylnojan har inte infunnit sig än så det är väl kanske lite tveksamt. (more…)
