[…] 2015 has been one where Apple has truly released new products all across the year. So many, in fact, that it’s probably difficult to recall every single new hardware and software product without referencing the history books. Starting with the X released in X to the X released in X, we’ll take a retrospective look at everything new that came out of Apple this year and what to expect in 2016.
There’ll be an Apple event on October 16, and it’ll be livestreamed for all to see. The previous event, announcing the iPhone 6 models and showing off the Apple Watch, was a major fuckup for most viewers, so Apple’ll want to get this one right.
The tagline, “It’s been way too long”, hints at a new iMac, I think. The fact that Apple’s using the rainbow colors makes me think there’ll be color variations of the new iMac yet again. All speculation of course. I’d also expect a Mac mini, but I don’t think there’ll be anything particularly interesting in terms of design there, just a bump and possibly some minor tweaks.
I’m not much for making public predictions about events, but the past few weeks have been littered with conversations about what Apple will and will not show and/or release on WWDC this year. So here you are, my predictions, pulled out of the blue, just like every other analyst out there.
I’m looking forward to see what WWDC will bring. The tech press will no doubt be disappointed, but that’s how the song goes these days. Luckily you can still make up your own mind based on hard facts and your own experience, and I urge you all to do just that.
I’m among the few who think that Apple’s iCloud is doing a pretty good job. Sure, I would like a better overview of my content, and some apps have trouble syncing, but since there are apps that just plain work, I tend to think that this isn’t actually iCloud’s fault. Maybe it’s hard to develop apps that use iCloud, and perhaps it’s unnecessary so. Maybe the apps that work well with iCloud are just made of better stuff. I don’t know and frankly, I don’t care at this point.
It’s over a year ago since I stopped using Simplenote, instead relying on Apple’s stock Notes.app. It’s not as pretty as Simplenote, and I’m not as organized perhaps, but since I process all my notes on a regular basis I found out that Notes.app did its thing. The iCloud sync gives me access to all my notes, on both iOS and OS X. Simplenote did that too, but I just don’t see the reason for additional apps on both iOS and OS X. And Notes.app just works, thanks to iCloud.
Gnome contributor Miguel de Icaza writes, among a lot of things, the following in his post about why he left Linux behind for OS X:
As long as you had an operating system that was 100% free, and you could patch and upgrade every component of your operating system to keep up with the system updates, you were fine and it was merely an inconvenience that lasted a few months while the kinks were sorted out.
Only a few months, huh.
The latest operating system for Mac from Apple is called Lion. Apple talks less and less about “OS X” when they mention Lion, and the version number is usually missing (10.7 if you wanted to know) from any information. It just works, as Apple and their cohorts tend to say.
Is it perfect, this Lion-thingy?
No, Google tells me there are a ton of bugs. Nothing too crucial although it might depend on what you’re doing with your computer, so I urge you to research that before updating your OS. (more…)
The last couple of months have been hard on me, mostly in a good way. I’ll get to why later, for now I’m just thrilled. Why? Well, because there are some new applications I’ve been meaning to try out, and will finally be able to now.

You know, the list goes on. Very cool. I am, in fact, writing this post in MarsEdit 3.something which feels nice. This used to be my blog post home back in the day. I doubt it will be again, unfortunately (and I’ll get to why later on) but still, feels nice.
So, good times ahead!
Läser att Google inte vill att sina anställda ska köra Windows längre, säkerheten påstås vara anledningen – detta trots att det stup i kvarten dyker upp rapporter om att Microsofts operativsystem står sig utmärkt i relation till OS X och Linux trots allt. Må så vara hur det vill med det, men vad som förvånar mig mer är att ingen reagerar på det här draget, och varför det är dåligt för merparten av datoranvändarna världen över?
Hur kan det vara dåligt att Google sparkar ut Windows?
Jag är ingen Microsoft-kramare, faktum är att jag kör Apples OS X på mina Macar av nödvärn och speldatorn rullar Vista bara för att det är där spelen finns. Helst av allt skulle jag köra open source hela vägen, det finns utmärkta Linux-distributioner idag, men tyvärr är den världen för långt efter i min bransch. (more…)
Senaste numret av MacWorld damp ned i brevlådan idag, och undertecknad har förstås några ord med i tidningen. Jag skriver om NetNewsWire, intervjuar Carola Lundmark som sålde sitt foto till Apple för att vara med som bakgrundsbild i kommande OS X-versionen Snow Leopard, och recenserar bloggredigeraren MarsEdit.
Jag är tyvärr rätt dålig på att komma ihåg att skriva de här posterna, men som synes så frilansar jag för MacWorld och har gjort det i ett par nummer. Det är kul, förstås.
Prenumeranter har fått tidningen, ni som föredrar att köpa i butik får nog vänta lite till tror jag.
Jämför man Macbook Air med unibody-Macbooken (aluminium alltså) så känns det nästan pinsamt att erkänna att jag valde den förra till min nya skrivmaskin. Den senare är nämligen bättre på nästan varje punkt (sämre cache och väger mer står på minuskontot) och du får helt enkelt så mycket mer dator för slantarna. Faktum är att du inte ens behöver betala lika mycket, du kan komplettera med externa hårddiskar eller vad du nu känner för.
Jag var medveten om detta när jag drog upp plastkortet för att betala för min Air. Faktum är att jag hade lite ångest inför valet. Lite. Men i slutändan tror jag det var rätt för mig. (more…)
Suck och stön. Aftonbladet har anmälts för att man skrivit lite om hur man installerar OS X på sin netbook. Trams från Apple eller relevant PR-firma som jobbar med företaget förstås.
Populära torrentklienten uTorrent finns nu i betaversion till Mac OS X. Jag bryr mig inte, Transmission fyller mina behov mer än väl.
Det här orkar jag aldrig prova själv. Heller. Men kanske du? PearPC and Mac OS X Installation, för diehards…
Jag har inte inhandlat Leopard än, senaste versionen av OS X (som jag skrivit en del om). Det finns flera funktioner jag verkligen vill ha där, främst Spaces vilket är grymt – det minns jag från Ubuntu-tiden. Alla andra pratar om Time Machine, men jag är faktiskt rätt duktig på att backa upp ändå, även om det här är bra mycket mer hardcore så klart.
Problemet är alla de buggar som rapporteras här och var, vilka jag tänkte leva med, samt uppgifter om att Adobe varnar för CS2-programmens stabilitet. (more…)
Ändrade planer, det blir ingen ändring av länkvändorna just nu, som jag talat om tidigare. Det är uppe på betalistan, men jag är lite osäker på hur jag skall göra, helt enkelt. Vi kör på som vanligt ett tag till. (more…)
