    Fastmail Failed

    I wanted to leave Google Apps behind, so I decided to give Fastmail a chance. Why, you might ask? Well, I can’t say I’m comfortable with Google these days, with them reading all my email and serving ads based on email content, as well as the overall notion that the company has their tentacles in every major online market. And then some.

    Quitting Google Apps, or Google’s email services really, has been on my todo list for years. The problem is there seem to be very few true alternatives.

    The Opera owned email service Fastmail came heavily recommended, so I thought that this might actually be worth a shot. I quit Google Apps cold turkey, pointing everything to a trial account at Fastmail, supplied my credit card information so that they could charge me at their leisure, and got started with the service.

  • Apple Won, Google Maps Is Available Again

    Google Maps is out for iPhone, which means that Apple won. The whole point of throwing out Google Maps was to get a better map experience on iOS, since the Google Maps app prior to iOS 6.0 was sorely lacking when compared to the Android offering. Despite all its troubles, Apple’s Maps.app is a better technical achievement and will no doubt be a great map alternative in the future.

    I think Apple knows this. I think Apple wanted Google Maps for iOS, but they wanted the same great Google Maps experience that Android users were getting, with turn by turn navigation and whatnot. I think that Apple’s Maps.app was just as much a pressure tool made for getting Google to release a proper Google Maps app for iPhone, as it was a declaration of independence from the largest mobile competitor.

    And thus Apple won, not only getting free of Google where maps are concerned, but also getting the Google Maps app they wanted.

    The job is just half done though, now comes the tricky part. Apple’s Maps.app can’t be allowed to be so bad compared to Google’s offering, that won’t look good. Maps.app is an embarrassment for Apple, and while they did get what they wanted with Google Maps, they also got a whole load of additional pressure where their own Maps.app is concerned.

  • Social media diet

    I was pointed to Per Håkanssons post about his social media diet by Mikael Pawlo, and I found it interesting. Per is quitting a bunch of services, such as Instagram, Google+ and Linkedin, to focus on more important matters. This quote pretty much sums up why he’s taking this somewhat drastic approach:

    I miss the days when you could go out and eat with a bunch of friends and focus on the conversation and not the latest pings, notifications and checkins on your mobile device.

    I see this a lot, people who feel that social media is interfering with their conversations and relationships in the physical world. But here’s the thing: Quitting social media won’t change this.

  • Google använder hashbangs för Chromebook-sajten

    Intressant. Google har valt att använda hashbangs för sin sajt om Chromebook, precis som Twitter och de nya Gawker-sidorna.

  • Chromebook har ett Chrome-tangentbord!

    Konstig rubrik tycker du? Den är faktiskt helt sann, för Googles Chromebook-lineup från Samsung och Acer har faktiskt Chrome-anpassade tangentbord.

    Det är också det mest intressanta med Chromebook.

    För något år sedan hade jag varit exalterad, jag älskar webbappar och vill lagra allt i molnet för snabb åtkomst överallt. Så det gör jag, med Dropbox och andra lösningar. Tyvärr är webbappen som koncept för oputsad för mig. Gmail är bra, men ser ut som stryk och är dåligt anpassad för högre upplösningar. Google Docs är bra, men buggar lite för ofta. Google Calendar är bra, men suger i mobilen. (more…)

  • Microsoft köper Skype – lite distans tack

    Allt pekar på att Microsoft köper Skype för en tramsig massa miljarder. Och vad händer då i våra kära sociala nätverk?

    Det kastas skit förstås. Det är ju Microsoft.

    Skämt som Skype Home, Skype Premium, Skype Ultimate etc. är vanliga, och lite småmysiga tycker jag. Minst lika vanligt är att man utbrister “NOOOOO!!!” på värsta Hollywood-vis, och att man nu ska se sig om efter en annan tjänst att använda för nu dog Skype. Slutligen, många tror nu att Skype kommer gå i graven, för när man är köpt av Microsoft är det tydligen slut. (more…)

  • Google Docs needs to get its act together

    There was a time when I wanted everything in Google Docs. When I thought that the simple word processor and spreadsheet was enough for me, that they covered my needs and was a viable alternative to local software.

    There was a time.

    Unfortunately things are different these days. If I want to share a spreadsheet with colleagues, I often have to try it several times because “sharing is currently unavailable”. If I want to write something, Docs sometimes finds it prudent to insert weird characters when I’m using the arrow keys to move the cursor. If I format a document, close it and then open it again, the formatting is sometimes not only lost, but completely random compared to what I put in. (more…)

  • Gruber skriver bra om Googles H.264-val

    Apropå H.264 och Googles hyckleri, som blev till en intressant diskussion i kommentarerna på min post, så är John Grubers bidrag ganska intressant. Återigen: vinnaren i det här spektaklet är Flash, ett synnerligen stängt format.

  • Googles hyckleri går ut över Chrome

    Bara väldigt kort för att jag ska lämna ett bokmanus innan veckan är slut, och sedan göra klart Allt om iPhone #7, och när WordPress 3.1 äntligen släpps så ska såväl WPMWP som Notes Blog rullas ut. Det är mycket nu och det är kul.

    Det här kunde jag dock inte låta vara. Google har nämligen bestämt sig för att sluta stödja videoformatet H.264 (vilket för övrigt är Apples val när det gäller att servera video med HTML5) till förmån för de öppna alternativen WebM (skapat av Google själva) och Theora, i den utmärkta webbläsaren Chrome.

    Jag har inget emot alternativen, men beslutet att inte stödja H.264 är rent och skärt hyckleri. (more…)
